A Welcome Message from our President

Dear Readers, I would like to welcome you all to a new academic year, and an exciting year of SBN events. Launching our new season was certainly a series of firsts for the new SBN Executive, and we are looking forward to building our career development skills—and learning about the local and global bioeconomy—along with you. Taking a proactive approach to career planning can seem like a daunting task, due to the enormous number of career tracks available to sciences graduates, most of which are not immediately apparent. On top of that, we’ve all heard horror stories from talking to recent graduates or watching CNN, which can make it seem like there are no jobs out there for new university graduates... Read more

A Long, Fruitful, and Unexpected Career

Lab. Medicine. Education. I used to believe that these were the only three paths available for those seeking a career in science, and that choosing the most advantageous undergraduate degree for my goals is crucial to my future. After meeting this amazing mentor and friend, my perspective has changed immensely. Learn about Mr. Darren Frew and his experiences in the science industry in this month's edition of Career Q&A.

    Gene Screen BC Screening Gala

    September 26, 2011 | 5pm - 7:30pm
SFU Woodward's, 149 West Hastings St.

Genome BC and BC Clinical Genomics Network are hosting the 2nd Annual Gene Screen BC Screening Gala!

Gene Screen BC is a contest to honour short videos that educate, inform and excite secondary students, the public and healthcare professionals about the role of genetics and genomics in human health. Last year the competition was met with great success and featured films from an array of genres, including animation, documentary - even an old-fashioned silent film!
We are happy to relay that this year many exciting films have already been submitted that "fit the bill"!  The top three winning films, along with the People's Choice, will be viewed at the Screening Gala on September 26th in the state-of-the-art Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema at SFU Woodward's in downtown Vancouver.  $8,000 in cash prizes will be awarded!
Following the screening, attendees are invited to mingle and congratulate the winners at a post-screening reception featuring light refreshments.
