Targeting Malonyl CoA Decarboxylase to Treat Heart Disease, Obesity and Diabetes
    November 21, 2011 | 12:30PM - 1:30PM

Room 3, Life Sciences Building, UBC Campus

"Malonyl CoA has an important role in the body in the regulation of both energy production and energy expenditure.   Tissue levels of malonyl CoA levels are in turn controlled by malonyl CoA decarboxylase (MCD), which degrades malonyl CoA to acetyl CoA.  Inhibition of MCD increases malonyl CoA levels in muscle, liver and brain, resulting in a decrease in muscle fatty acid oxidation, a decrease in appetite, and an increase in whole body metabolism.  In this seminar Dr. Lopaschuk will describe the initial discovery of MCD, as well as the process for eventually developing novel inhibitors of MCD for use in the treatment of heart disease, diabetes and obesity."

What are the major eHealth issues? And, what are the emerging trends and technologies on the horizon that will shape future eHealth tools?"
