Student Biotechnology Network and Genome BC are pleased to invite BC’s scientific community to our annual Research Exchange & Poster Competition. Students from BC’s academic institutions will have an opportunity to present their research to our province’s scientific community. Prizes will be given for the top three posters as selected by a panel of judges. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the Genomics Forum, talk with researchers from academia and industry, as well as meet company representatives.

Participation in the Genomics Forum is not necessary for entry into the Poster Competition. However, attending the Genomics Forum is highly encouraged.

Competition Details

  • Post-doctoral, graduate, undergraduate, as well as project and platform technology research posters from across BC are invited
  • Research posters on genomics-related topics are encouraged
  • Recommended poster size: 36” x 48”
  • A maximum of 50 posters will be chosen to present at the competition
  • Each poster presentation will be assessed by at least two judges (judging criteria)
  • Students must be prepared to talk for 5 minutes (includes Q&A) about their poster to the judges
  • There is no cost for submission.
  • Prizes: 1st: $500, 2nd: $300, 3rd: $200
  • The top three Poster Presentations will be asked to give a short 2 minute description of their projects at Genome BC’s Genomics Forum

Abstract Guidelines

*The project should include at least some application or reference to genomics techniques or concepts*

  • Abstracts must be submitted using the provided abstract.  Fill out the Abstract Form an submit it during the registration process
  • Abstract forms MUST be renamed with the submitting authors name. Ie. If the submitting author is John Smith, his abstract form submission would be SBN_Smith_John.doc
  • 300 word limit
  • Single spaced
  • Size 12 Times New Roman Font

Poster Guidelines

The poster will be judged on both presentation (aesthetics, formatting, information flow) and content (quality of writing, data, conclusions). Criteria that will be used to judge the posters can be viewed here.

Judging Criteria

Section I: Poster Display                                                                                    25%

Judges will evaluate the display as a summary of the project and its conclusions. They also evaluate the display in terms of its layout and clarity in illustrating the scientific techniques involved in the research project.

Section II: Content and Oral Presentation                                                           75%

Judges will evaluate the project’s experimental design, protocols, data collection and analysis. The students’ command of techniques and skills is assessed along with the validity of their conclusions. The judges will also assess the students’ oral presentation in terms of the level of scientific knowledge demonstrated and their ability to explain and defend their conclusions.
