Summary

Need to build your network with like-minded peers and industry professionals? Please join SBN at our Annual Biotech Expo and Conference on February 26th! This is a great opportunity to learn about potential careers and interact with some of the leaders in life sciences here in BC. The evening will include:

Keynote

Dr. Ali Tehrani

President & Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Tehrani is one of Zymeworks' co-founders and currently serves as President and CEO of the company. He has been an integral part of many of the Company's corporate achievements including raising seed and angel financing and overseeing the Company's technical operations and patent filings. Dr. Tehrani holds both Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Massachusetts, and has a Doctoral degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of British Columbia. While completing his PhD degree he co-founded the Student Biotechnology Network, for which he received the UBC Faculty of Science Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership in 2002.

Dr. Tehrani has served on the MITACS Industrial Advisory Board, and BIOTECanada's Industrial and Environmental Committee. Currently, he is a member of the Board of Directors of LifeSciences British Columbia and the Student Biotechnology Network.

Edmond Lee

Senior Manager, Commercial Affairs Cardiome Pharma Corp.

Edmond completed his undergrad at UBC with a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science. From there, he joined Chromos Molecular Systems as a Research Associate. During his time at Chromos, he was continually exposed to the business aspects of the industry which piqued his interest in the commercial side of biotech. After completing an MBA specializing in the management of biotechnology at SFU, he joined Cardiome Pharma Corp. as a Business Development Associate. Over several years there, his role has expanded to include Commercial Affairs and Business Development.

Nathalie Beliveau

Associate Director-Program Management FSP, DOCS

Nathalie currently works for DOCS a division of ICON Clinical Research plc, who are a global provider of outsourced development services to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries. Nathalie manages a team of people including second level management in both Canada, Latin America and Mexico who work on clinical trials, research and development initiatives. She has a Bachelors from Acadia University, a Masters in Kinesiology and Exercise Science from the University of Ottawa and is completing her PhD in Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix. Nathalie's education and thesis in emotional intelligence specifically has helped her frame the way she communicates with clients and the way she manages a large team of people and personalities. Her previous work experiences in the United Kingdom and Italy have provided her with a greater perspective on what is possible and applicable to different scenarios in and outside of the office.

Jean-Sébastien Beaucage, PEng, MScA

Manager, Strategy & Operations, KPMG

Jean-Sébastien Beaucage is a manager at KPMG’s Vancouver office with 9 years of consulting and management experience across variety of industries; including manufacturing, energy, oil & gas, utilities, and technology. J-S’s primary areas of expertise are supply chain management, focusing on sourcing and procurement and business transformations.

J-S’s is a professional engineer by training, who has worked on a broad cross-section of technology and business transformation initiatives. This combination of skills allows J-S to be equally comfortable interacting with operations personnel, as well as communicating with the management and executive ranks.

J-S holds an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and a research master degree in Innovation & Technology Management from the École Polytechnique de Montréal.

Nav Chahal, MSc

Research Associate, Xenon Pharmaceuticals

Nav has been working at Xenon Pharmaceuticals Inc. for 5 years where she started as a synthetic chemist in the Medicinal Chemistry Department. After cross-training in bio-analytical chemistry, she has been working in bio-analysis and metabolite identification studies for the past 2 years. Before joining Xenon, Nav was a medicinal chemist at Neuromed Pharmaceuticals Inc. for 3.5 years. She is a co-inventor of 5 patents.

Nav did her undergraduate studies in Chemistry at the University of Alberta, where she worked in various research groups during the summer months. She obtained her M.Sc. in synthetic chemistry with Prof. Stephen Hanessian at l’Université de Montréal.

Alana J. Robson, P. Eng.

Senior Manager, Scientific Research and Experimental Development, KPMG

Alana Robson is a senior manager with KPMG’s Greater Vancouver and Regions West SR&ED practice, where she assists clients to identify eligible SR&ED activities and expenditures, prepare technical project descriptions, and respond to Canada Revenue Agency reviews of SR&ED claims. Her areas of specialization include food processing, pharmaceutical and natural health products, agriculture, chemical and polymer processes and small manufacturers.

Alana is a chemical engineer with fifteen years of professional engineering experience in manufacturing and research and development in chemicals, polymers and packaging materials. Alana has worked extensively in process development and improvement of chemical and polymer processes. Her responsibilities have included yield, capacity and uptime improvements, process control strategies for batch and continuous processes, Six Sigma improvement projects, and capital project management. She has managed quality management system implementation and compliance. As a research scientist, she developed and commercialized new and improved products and processes for polymers and packaging materials, and holds several patents for flexible packaging films.

Maryam Sadeghi, MetaOptima Technology Inc

Director, Digital Health Hub | CEO, MetaOptima Technology Inc

Maryam, completed her PhD in Computing Science at Simon Fraser University in the Medical Image Analysis lab working closely with BC Cancer Agency and Skin Care Center at UBC Dermatology. She is interested in e-Health and m-Health applications as innovative patient-centric digital health solutions.

Meanwhile Sadeghi’s company, MetaOptima Technology Inc., was one of 10 companies shortlisted (out of 146 entrants) for the 2013 BCIC New Ventures Competition. The company won a $40,000 Wavefront Wireless prize package. Maryam was also selected as the SFU Entrepreneur of the Year in 2013.
