Mark Pidkowich

Mark is a Barrister & Solicitor, Patent & Trade-mark Agent based in Vancouver. Following a PhD in plant developmental genetics from the University of British Columbia, Mark worked as a research associate at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he focused on the metabolic engineering of designer oils in oilseed crops. He has also worked on the molecular farming of enzyme therapies for rare metabolic disorders. He eventually made his way back to UBC to obtain his J.D. and he currently works as a Barrister & Solicitor, Patent & Trade-mark Agent at Smart & Biggar / Fetherstonhaugh & Co. He focuses on the development and management of patent portfolios in biotech, natural products, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and medical devices. Mark regularly prepares international patent applications and advises clients throughout subsequent patent prosecution in various jurisdictions. He also represents clients in licenses, mergers and acquisitions, and research and development agreements.

Dave Matthews

Dave has spent the last 20 years as a senior finance executive in the life sciences industry. He has worked with companies ranging from start-ups through to large, profitable multinationals in North America and Europe, including Allelix Biopharmaceuticals (acquired by NPS Pharmaceuticals) and Aspreva Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Galenica) and has been closely involved in forming over a dozen corporate partnering and joint venture transactions with large pharmaceutical companies. Dave also has extensive capital markets experience completing a number of public and private financings raising over $300 million with his companies. At GenomeDx, Dave works to establish contracts and licensing with our academic partners as well as on finance, corporate development and administrative activities.

Mario Kasapi

Mario joined The University of British Columbia’s University-Industry Liaison Office in 2002. As Associate Director, he manages the Sponsored Research Group, which negotiates about $150 million in contracts each year (about 2,000 agreements), and co-manage the Technology Transfer Group which is responsible for commercializing the University’s intellectual property. Before joining UBC he was actively involved in various aspects of corporate operations and business development, for both public and private companies in the life sciences. He has also consulted for companies and have been actively involved in the development and implementation of strategic and business plans, and intellectual property and licensing strategies.

Peter Hudson

Peter is a serial entrepreneur who started his first company when he was 14 and figured out that people would pay him to write HTML. He studied engineering physics as an undergrad and then stated a hydrology software company. After ten years of hydrology, he got the idea for his new venture in print and eBook bundling because he owns lots of books, loves being right, and feels compelled to provide citations. When he’s not behind a computer you’ll generally find him on telemark skis or a mountain bike.
