Introducing ScienceSolvers

Introducing ScienceSolvers: A New Approach For Solving Problems & Advancing Science

At one point or another, most of us in the lab have come across obstacles that have completely stopped our research efforts, delaying our publication, thesis, graduation, or the vacation that we spent so long planning!!! Whether it is trying to make a particular buffer or figuring out why an experiment doesn’t behave the way it is supposed to, we often seek answers by consulting other fellow researchers. In some cases, several people will have made the same mistake, but in other instances it might require a few answers to piece together the final solution. Wouldn’t it be convenient if there was an easy way to access this collective knowledge before we get too frustrated with the problem?

The Idea

This is the idea behind ScienceSolvers- a community based approach at tackling scientific problems halting the progress of research. ScienceSolvers is a not-for-profit, open source entity under development for solving bottleneck science problems. ScienceSolvers will allow questions to be posted to a community and the community will work to arrive at possible answers. In this way, the question is opened up to a wide and diverse cross-section of people (not just the researchers of a particular forum or discipline) to promote discussions and innovative thinking. Once answers are posted to a particular problem the community will then vote on the best one. In this way, problems are answered and solvers gain the recognition they deserve from the community. But that’s not all - through the site’s extensive use of tags, a database of related information will be generated; easily searchable and highly informative. Hence, the site and its community will become more powerful each time it is used.

Your Involvement

ScienceSolvers is still in its infancy and offers a great opportunity for willing volunteers to get involved. We are currently looking for people to assist with testing and providing initial feedback. Opportunities may also materialize for other possibilities contributing to this initiative . It goes without saying that being involved in such an initiative demonstrates one’s ambition and desire for progressing science, something prospective employers will notice and present an opportunity for one to shine. If you would like more information, or if you are interested in attending a presentation on ScienceSolvers to learn more about the site, please contact May Kazem at may.kazem [at] gmail.com
